Class Exercise #1

1. Understanding typographic logos + Connotations
  1. Research 25 typographic logos and analyze / define connotations of letterforms. Take photos, search magazine, search online, etc. to find a large array of styles. Layout these logos however you wish just remember, you must be able to pin up the work and turn in a hard copy for a grade. Please print in color also. Example of process doc.
  2. Now, you will go one step further.
Start to think about what visual forms evoke different feelings. For each logo, begin to describe connotations in a written context. Use terms that are specific and provide clarity like sophisticated, rich, introverted, silly, organic, etc. If you are unsure of a single word, try describing using type terms or other design composition terminology. The important thing is you start to learn how to define meaning in form.
2. Express your Identity
  1. Create a list of 20 words that describe you. Be specific!
  2. Hand your list to a neighbor. Ask your neighbor to cross out / or edit words that are not clear or specific enough to visualize successful. For example, creative is not a good word to try and visualize... try to think about how you are creative to make more specific... comic book guy... fahionista, introverted painter... etc.
  3. Narrow down your list to 5 words
  4. Research at least 25 images from interior design, fashion, graphic design / art, nature, architecture, etc. that visually describe the word(s) you want to communicate in personal logo. Create moodboards for each word that will help drive the art direction of your project.
